Keeping Our Pups Cool This Summer

Keeping Our Pups Cool This Summer

As a dog mum to two energetic cockapoos, Baxter (2.5 years old) and Teddy (1.5 years old), I know how important it is to keep our furry friends safe in the heat. Summer is all about fun and sunshine, but it's also crucial to make sure our pups stay cool and avoid overheating. Here are some tips I've found helpful to keep Baxter and Teddy happy and chilled during the hot summer months:

Hydration Heroes: This one's a no-brainer! Fresh, cool water should always be readily available for our pups. I like to add ice cubes to their water bowl throughout the day for an extra refreshing perk. On walks, I carry a portable water bowl and offer them frequent water breaks.

Early Bird Walks and Shady Paths: The midday sun is scorching hot, so I schedule Baxter and Teddy's walks for the cooler mornings or evenings. We stick to shady paths whenever possible, and avoid hot asphalt pavements that can burn their paws.

Creating a Cool Oasis in the Garden: Our garden is their summer playground, but I make sure there are plenty of shaded areas for them to escape the direct sun. A pop-up tent or large umbrella works wonders in creating a cool sanctuary.

Beat the Heat with Cooling Mats: Cooling mats or pet beds activated by water or pressure can be a lifesaver for our pups. Damp bandanas around their necks are another great way to help them cool down.

Summer Clip, Not a Shave: A full shave isn't ideal for a double coat, but a summer trim can help regulate Baxter and Teddy's body temperature. I consult their groomer for a cut that keeps their fur healthy while promoting airflow.

Fun Indoor Playtime During Peak Heat: While Baxter and Teddy love their garden playtime, I adjust their schedule during the hottest part of the day. We switch to indoor games or mental stimulation activities that don't require excessive exertion.

Cars Become Ovens – Never Leave Them Inside: This is an important reminder for all dog parents. Even with the windows cracked open, parked cars heat up rapidly and can be deadly for pets.

By following these tips, we can ensure our furry companions have a safe and enjoyable summer. Remember, if you notice signs of overheating, such as excessive panting, drooling, or lethargy, immediately take them to a cool place, offer water, and contact your veterinarian.
